{"id":2637,"date":"2025-07-10T15:05:52","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T14:05:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.purpldiscounts.com\/?p=2637"},"modified":"2025-11-07T17:38:50","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T17:38:50","slug":"changes-to-universal-credit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.purpldiscounts.com\/changes-to-universal-credit\/","title":{"rendered":"Changes to Universal Credit: What They Mean for Disabled People, and Where to Get Support"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On 9 July 2025, Parliament approved changes to Universal Credit that will affect new applicants who have a disability or long-term health condition. If you&#8217;re trying to work out what it means for you or someone you know, here&#8217;s a simple breakdown of what\u2019s changing, who it applies to, and where to turn for help if you need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-changing\"><strong>What\u2019s Changing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the moment, people who can\u2019t work due to a health condition or disability may receive an extra payment as part of Universal Credit. This is known as the LCWRA element \u2014 short for Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity \u2014 and it\u2019s <strong>currently worth around \u00a3390 per month<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From April 2026, anyone newly applying for Universal Credit and assessed as having limited capability for work will receive a<strong> reduced amount \u2014 around \u00a3208 per month instead<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you&#8217;re already receiving this support, your payments won&#8217;t change.<\/strong> You&#8217;ll continue to get the same amount, including annual increases in line with inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has said this is part of a wider plan to simplify the benefits system and increase funding for employment support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-will-it-affect\"><strong>Who Will it Affect?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This change only applies to new claimants from April 2026 onwards. So if you&#8217;re already on Universal Credit and receiving the LCWRA element, you won&#8217;t be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s expected that around <strong>370,000 people could be impacted over the next few years<\/strong>. That includes people who may become too unwell to work or are newly diagnosed with long-term health conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-about-pip\"><strong>What About PIP?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Personal Independence Payment (PIP) isn\u2019t affected by this change. It\u2019s a separate benefit designed to help with the extra costs of living with a disability or health condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are ongoing discussions about possible changes to the way PIP works in the future, but nothing has been decided yet.
